England’s Euros Campaign Ends with Quarterfinal Loss to Greece

England’s journey in the Euros came to an end on Saturday after suffering a 2-1 loss to Greece in the quarterfinals.

Gareth Southgate’s men took an early lead through Luke Shaw, but goals from Takis Bakasetas and Dimitrios Pelkas turned the game in Greece’s favor.

England started the match brightly and took the lead in the 25th minute when Shaw fired home from close range after a cross from Harry Kane. However, Greece equalized just six minutes later when Bakasetas curled a free-kick into the top corner.

England had chances to regain the lead but were denied by some excellent saves from Greek goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis. Greece took the lead for the first time in the match in the 55th minute when Pelkas headed home from a corner.

England pushed for an equalizer but could not find a way past Karnezis. The defeat means that England have now failed to reach the semifinals of a major tournament since 1996.

Southgate’s Future in Doubt

The defeat has led to speculation about the future of England manager Gareth Southgate. Southgate has been in charge of the team since 2016, and his contract is due to expire in 2022.

Southgate has overseen some progress during his time in charge, but the team’s failure to reach the semifinals of the Euros has led to calls for him to be replaced.

England’s Next Challenge

England’s next challenge will be the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The team will be hoping to improve on their performance in the Euros and reach the latter stages of the tournament.

England will face a tough test in Qatar, but they will be confident of making a strong showing. The team has a number of talented players, and they will be determined to make amends for their disappointing performance in the Euros.
