Russia Deploys Forces to Counter Ukrainian Border Incursion

On August 6, 2024, Russia deployed air and artillery forces to counter a Ukrainian border incursion in Kursk Oblast, a federal subject of Russia located in the Central Federal District.

Kursk Oblast

Kursk Oblast is centered on the city of Kursk and extends across the southern end of the Central Russian Upland. The oblast borders Ukraine to the west and is home to approximately 1.2 million people.

The Ukrainian incursion is the latest in a series of escalating tensions between the two countries. In recent weeks, there have been several reports of cross-border shelling and exchanges of fire between Ukrainian and Russian forces.

The Russian Defense Ministry has accused Ukraine of provoking the incursion and has vowed to take all necessary measures to protect its territory.

The Ukrainian government has denied responsibility for the incursion, calling it a Russian "fabrication." Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of trying to create a pretext for further aggression against Ukraine.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation in Kursk Oblast. The United States and NATO have expressed concern over the escalating tensions and have called for both sides to exercise restraint.
